i swear if teen girls start walking around with unlit cigarettes in their mouths after ‘the fault in our stars’ movie shit will go down
I WANT JOHN GREEN TO BE ON THE BOAT IN AMSTERDAM AND I WANT HIM TO BE THE ONE WHO SHOUTS, “THE BEAUTIFUL COUPLE IS BEAUTIFUL” IN A PATHETIC AND OBVIOUSLY FAKE DUTCH ACCENT
JOHN NEEDS TO SEE THIS.
So my grandmother was watching CTV and they had a story on a book club filled with teen girls. The story was basically talking about how “sick-lit” is endorsing suicide and depression and is telling kids that suicide is a great option.

not only is that horribly inaccurate, and the psychiatrist they interviewed that said it should be slapped, but they mentioned The Fault in Our Stars by John Green (aka my favourite book ever).
TFioS, for those who don’t know (SPOILER ALERT), is about a girl who is dying of cancer, meets and falls in love with another cancer patient, and he dies.
I’m not sure how they even get the idea that TFioS endorses depression and suicide, but apparently they believe it makes kids sad and want to die. Bullshit. They complained that it was so popular and was a bestseller for a long time. Seriously?!
They also mentioned books such as ”By The Time You Read This, I’ll Be Dead” “Thirteen Reasons Why” and “Before I Die”.
Thirteen Reasons Why is a story of a girl who commits suicide, but it never endorses it or makes the statement that she made a good choice. It also follows a boy who loved her and shows how everyone is affected by her choice.
They complained that Before I Die was advocating sex at a young age, as the main character is dying and wants to complete a bucket list, that includes having sex. Like, come on people.
Kids are reading. These books are not endorsing suicide, depression, or anything else, but they are talking about them, and making them public and trying to get kids to talk about them with others.
I’m more concerned about kids, teens, and adults, that read Fifty Shades of Grey and think that that shows a healthy relationship and a great example of BDSM (hint, it’s not, and it breaks every BDSM rule there is)
So basically, fuck this article. You’re trying to tell kids that they are stupid and easily influenced. Well okay, guess they should stop watching tv and movies too, cause look at all the crime shows and drama shows out there where people commit suicide or murder. Are they not going to be influenced by that too?

“I’m in love with you, and I’m not in the business of denying myself the simple pleasure of saying true things. I’m in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we’re all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we’ll ever have, and I am in love with you.” -The Fault In Our Stars
day 19: still no special edition of tfios. planning attack on customs in order to rescue it.
(basic story for everyone as I’ve never mentioned it before. B&N shipped the book on Jan 2, and it was supposed to have arrived by the 17th. It hasn’t. The support people from B&N responded to my email saying it was probably delayed at customs and could probably take another 1-2 weeks to arrive. If you know anything about this special edition you know about the misprinting incident. So there is a good chance that when my book does arrive it will be misprinted and I will have to send it back to exchange it for a new one. I shoulda just drove to Maine and bought it in store.)
My top ten favorite books (that I own) - part two
